The Nigerian Navy has successfully intercepted a significant quantity of narcotics and apprehended a suspect named Asamani Emmanuel along the Badagry waterways. In a press statement, Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, highlighted the use of advanced technology, specifically the Falcon Eye Alignment, in locating and intercepting the contraband.
On March 27 2024, the NNS patrol team discovered a large wooden boat carrying 193 bags of cannabis sativa, weighing approximately 7,443 kilograms. This seizure was made possible through the effective utilization of the Nigerian Navy Maritime Domain Awareness facilities, including the Falcon Eye Alignment and Regional Maritime Awareness Capability Centre, as well as the use of human intelligence.
The operation was conducted as part of the ongoing Operation Water Guard, which aims to maintain a credible presence along the Lagos waterways and adjoining creeks in order to combat crime and ensure maritime security. Commodore Oladejo emphasized the commitment of the Nigerian Navy, under the strategic directive of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of the Naval Staff, to rid the maritime environment of all forms of criminal activities.
The successful arrest and seizure of a large quantity of narcotics demonstrate NNS BEECROFT’s unwavering dedication to curbing the spread and use of illicit drugs, particularly among the youth population. This effort is crucial for safeguarding public health and national security.
Commodore Oladejo issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the illicit drug trade, stating that the Nigerian Navy will continue to pursue and apprehend those responsible. The narcotics and the suspect have been handed over to the appropriate agency for further investigation and potential prosecution.
The interception of these narcotics highlights the importance of proactive law enforcement measures and the role of advanced technology in combating drug trafficking and related crimes.
