In a significant legal verdict, the Kano High Court pronounced a Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, aged 47, guilty of fatally stabbing his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, aged 22. The ruling, delivered by Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji, sentenced Frank to death by hanging after finding him culpable of the crime of homicide.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, presented compelling evidence, including witness testimonies and exhibits, establishing Frank’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The court, in its judgment, highlighted inconsistencies in Frank’s testimony, leading to his conviction.

The tragic incident occurred on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters in Kano, where Frank fatally stabbed Ummukulsum with a knife, resulting in her demise. Despite Frank’s plea of not guilty, the court was convinced of his involvement in the crime based on the prosecution’s evidence.

Frank’s defense counsel, Muhummad Dan’azumi, sought clemency for his client, invoking Section 313 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL). In his defense, Frank claimed self-defense, stating that he stabbed Ummukulsum in response to her alleged assault on him.

Following the judgment, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, the mother of the deceased, expressed her satisfaction with the court’s decision. The case, marked by its tragic circumstances, underscores the importance of justice and accountability in cases of violence against women.

Prior to the trial, reports surfaced detailing Frank’s financial investments in his relationship with Ummukulsum, including substantial monetary transfers and material support. However, these details, though emotive, did not sway the court’s decision, which prioritized the legal aspects of the case.

In conclusion, the verdict serves as a solemn reminder of the need for justice and protection of vulnerable individuals within society. As the legal process unfolds, the hope remains for a fair and equitable resolution that upholds the principles of law and safeguards against impunity.
