On May 9, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Benue State, Nigeria, as gunmen suspected to be bandits killed a commander of the agro ranger unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The deceased, identified as Mike Ode, was brutally killed in Shaapera community, located in the Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.

According to Nicholas Ode, the uncle of the deceased, his brother was on a special assignment in Shaapera village when the confrontation with the herdsmen took place. During the gun duel, the NSCDC officers managed to eliminate around 10 of the bandits. However, tragically, Mike Ode was gunned down while the other officers were able to escape.

The NSCDC Command Public Relations Officer, Mike Ejelikwu, confirmed the incident and expressed his condolences. He assured the public that this loss would not deter the command from fulfilling its constitutional mandate of providing security for every law-abiding citizen in the state. The NSCDC has a specialized squad called the Agro Rangers, which is responsible for providing security for agro-allied investments, including animal husbandry and crop production, in areas such as Gwer West, Logo, Apa, Kwande, and Guma.

Ejelikwu also mentioned that the deceased commander was killed during the gun duel with the bandits. He noted that there were heavy casualties on the part of the bandits, emphasizing the bravery and effectiveness of the NSCDC officers. The command is in contact with the family of the deceased, offering support and assistance during this difficult time.

It is important to acknowledge the dedicated service and sacrifice of security personnel like Mike Ode, who put their lives on the line to protect the community. Their bravery and commitment to upholding law and order deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by various regions in Nigeria. It highlights the need for continued efforts to address the root causes of banditry and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens. The government and relevant authorities must work together to strengthen security measures and provide support to security agencies in their fight against criminal elements.

As a society, we must stand united against such acts of violence and support the efforts of our security forces in maintaining peace and security. The loss of Commander Mike Ode is a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those who protect us, and we must honor his memory by striving for a safer and more secure Nigerian.
