Nigeria: Armed Robbers Target Delta Polytechnic Students in Ogwashi-Uku, Leading to Mass Exodus from Hostels

In recent weeks, students of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, located in Aniocha South Local Government Area, have faced a series of harrowing experiences as armed robbers have invaded their out-of-campus hostels. The attacks have become so frequent and intense that many students have been compelled to flee their accommodations in fear for their safety.
Reports indicate that the armed robbers have been targeting hostels in both Ogwashi-Uku town and neighboring communities where students reside. The assailants have been brazenly robbing students of their valuables, including laptops, mobile phones, and personal belongings. In some instances, the robbers have even coerced students into transferring money to their bank accounts.
The situation has escalated to the point where most of the affected hostels have been abandoned by students who feel vulnerable and unprotected. This mass exodus has disrupted the academic activities of the polytechnic, prompting concerns about the safety and security of students both on and off-campus.
Initially, there were rumors that the school had been shut down due to the attacks. However, the Delta State Police Command has clarified that this is not the case. The students are on a mid-term break, and the school remains open.
To address the escalating security concerns, the police have intensified their presence in the affected areas. The Area Commander of Ogwashi-Uku and the Divisional Police Officer have been in close communication with the Commissioner of Police, who has deployed additional personnel to prevent further incidents.
In response to inquiries, the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, has emphasized that the attacks are not directly related to the institution. He has clarified that the affected hostels are rented apartments located outside the school premises and at a considerable distance from the campus.
The situation remains tense, with students and the local community demanding a swift and effective response from law enforcement agencies and the school management. The safety and security of students, both on-campus and in their off-campus accommodations, are paramount, and urgent measures must be taken to address the threats posed by these armed robbers.
