Ms Alexis Sumareh, wife of Bakaw Sumareh, a Gambian resident in the United States is appealing to the Gambia Government to help her husband who is currently being detained by Ice in Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Ga.

The mother of five children, said her husband has been locked up since December 2019. She said the U. S Government is trying to get him deported back to The Gambia, after living in the United States for over 20 years.

“We have been married for 12 years and have 5 children between the ages of two to eleven years. My husband is a great person, he has no criminal record that should cause him to get deported,” Ms Sumareh said.

The distraught young mother said even though her husband’s visa has expired, but they have filed two different applications to adjust his status which she said are still pending. She added that Ice Officials have refused to release him on a Order of Supervision.

“They prefer to keep him detained and away from his family. I’m asking the Gambia Government to help us by not renewing any travel documents for any Gambian citizens. My husband deserves to be free and go to Gambia on his own will and not to be deported,” Ms Sumareh remarked.

She added that the facility where her husband is located has 7 confirmed cases of Covid-19. She said the ICE (Department of Homeland Security) preferred to keep him cornered with hundreds of other inmates than to release him because they did not care nothing about the immigrants.

Meanwhile, she appeals to The Gambia Government to help her husband’s immediate release.
