Alasan Senghore, Secretary General of The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) has said that the Red Cross is always the first to be there during disasters and also remains on the ground, adding that they are committed to continue serving humanity.
SG Senghore made the remarks at Jarra Soma, Lower River Region during the conclusion of The Gambia Red Cross Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)Secretary General’svisits to Migration Operation Sites and Humanitarian Service Points, among others in various parts of the country.
The IFRC top officials were on a visit to The Gambia to profile the Global Route Based Migration Program as an important new way in which the IFRC network is supporting the safety and dignity of people on the move around the world, including in Africa and MENA and implementing strategy 2030 (and as a program that has built on past experiences such as through Mixed Movement and EUTF Projects, among others) as well as to show the IFRC network’s unique strengths and leadership in supporting people on the move along migratory routes, through the Migration Humanitarian Service Points and Information Centres providing support regardless of status; cross-border and route-based coordination, and leveraging Federation-Wide resources including human, financial, and technical expertise.
He pointed out that their migration project is phasing out but their migration program will continue. “We remain committed and are looking for more funding to expand,” he said.
He noted that resources in terms of disaster preparedness and response is already given but said the challenge is around projects. “As a National Society we try to innovate all the time and we will continue that. From this mission we will work harder to ensure that we get more resources to address some of the needs particularly in relations to the issues of the root causes of migration,” he said.
“The IFRC SG has challenged us not to only maintain the level we are but to reach further and this we are committed to doing,” he said.
