President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, have strongly condemned the tragic shooting incident that occurred at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), resulting in the loss of three lives. The assailant, identified as a white former college professor in his 60s named Anthony Polito, was killed in a confrontation with the police. Although the victims’ identities remain undisclosed, reports suggest that none of them were students.
The campus, located near the renowned Las Vegas Strip, will remain closed on Thursday and Friday as authorities investigate the incident. Anthony Polito had reportedly applied for a position at the university, raising concerns about the motive behind the attack.
In response to the incident, President Biden expressed his condolences, acknowledging the devastating impact of recent acts of violence in different parts of the country. He particularly highlighted the need for bipartisan efforts to address the pervasive issue of gun violence, emphasizing the urgency of implementing measures such as banning assault weapons, enforcing universal background checks, and passing a national red flag law.
The president underscored the abnormality of the current situation, noting that the United States has witnessed over 600 mass shootings and around 40,000 deaths due to gun violence in the current year alone. He urged Congress to take decisive action and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in preventing further tragedies.
President Biden also commended the bravery of law enforcement personnel who responded to the shooting incidents in Austin, San Antonio, and Las Vegas. He directed federal law enforcement officials to support state and local investigations and provide necessary assistance to affected communities.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of yet another senseless act of violence, President Biden’s statement reflects a call for collective responsibility in addressing the root causes of gun violence and implementing effective solutions to protect communities from such devastating incidents.
