According to authorities, a woman from South Carolina died on Tuesday after being attacked by an alligator while walking her dog near a golf course.

The unidentified 69-year-old woman was discovered dead in Hilton Head Island’s Spanish Wells community, according to a news release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was discovered at the lagoon’s edge, near a golf course. The sheriff’s office reported that emergency rescue efforts were disrupted by what appeared to be a guardian alligator.

The woman’s body was recovered after the alligator was safely removed. An autopsy is in the works.

According to sheriff’s officials, this was the second fatal alligator attack in Beaufort County in the past year. In August 2022, an alligator attacked a Sun City woman, age 88, at a lagoon near her home.

In Fort Pierce, Florida, in February, an alligator dragged an 85-year-old woman who was also walking her dog into a pond by her foot.
