Hanna Maliar, the deputy defense minister of Ukraine, said that troops were “engaged in active moves” to move the counteroffensive forward in the south of the country.
Maliar said:
Our units have recorded tactical successes practically everywhere they attack in the south. They are making steady progress. The advance is currently up to 2 kilometers in each direction.
Russian forces were trying to drive Ukrainian forces out of the devastated Bakhmut city, which Russia had captured a month ago.
Despite declaring that it had suffered significant casualties from Kyiv’s forces within the previous 24 hours, Russia has not officially acknowledged Ukrainian advances.
“Every soldier, every new step we take, every metre of Ukrainian land freed from the enemy is of the utmost importance,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said of the developments.
