Robbery at Islamic event in Katsina kills 9, injures 16

The Katsina State Police Command on Monday confirmed that seven persons were killed and 16 others injured when bandits attacked a religious event in Kusa town in Musawa Local Government Area of the state.
Police said robbers burst into the gathering just after 10pm on Sunday and fired several shots at attendees.
Abubakar Aliyu, spokesperson for the command, said: “On November 5, 2023, at around 10:30 p.m., a large number of bandits carrying dangerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles, attacked a procession in Maulud, firing sporadically in Lugar Kusa village, Musawa region. Katsina State Government Area.
“Emergency services were called in immediately after receiving reports and repelled the attack. Seven people were shot dead and 18 others sustained gunshot wounds and were sent to receive emergency treatment. They were evacuated to Msawa General Hospital.
“However, two people out of the injured were confirmed dead by the doctor while receiving treatment. Investigation is still ongoing. Efforts are on with a view to arresting the perpetrators of the dastardly act. Further development will be communicated in due course.”
Residents revealed that the bandits surrounded the religious gathering after which they began to shoot sporadically.
A resident, who pleaded for anonymity, said, “The bandits surrounded the venue of the Maulud celebration and fired gunshots at the participants, injuring many and taking several captives away.”
