A retired security officer since 1994, Ousman Jarju is said to have been arrested by the police while on a field work as a staff of the Brikama Area Council.
Sources said yesterday afternoon, a truck full of Police Intervention Unit -PIU- officers came to Jarju’s house searching for what they believed to be weapons kept by him (Ousman Jarju). Our source say after nearly an hour of searching, they could not find anything but went ahead and arrested Jarju.
Another source told us that he personally visited the station to see how best Jarju could be released but said he was told that one Landing Bojang, who is believed to be the Police Operations Commander in the West Coast Region has to be communicated to first. The source further added that they contacted Landing Bojang and he promised to investigate and get back to them, “but after we tried to call him back, we couldn’t get to him,” said this source (Name withheld).
Since January, the home town of former President Jammeh has dominated headlines in this West African nation, the most recent one was last week when some residents of Kanilai reportedly organised a demonstration, demanding for the withdrawal of ECOMIG forces, who are in the country on an ECOWAS mandate, from their community. This later spread into a serious fiasco, leading to shooting that led to many of the villagers sustaining injuries, which also caused the death of Haruna Jatta.
We are currently in contact with the Police at the headquarters in Banjul, to get an official version of the story.
