In a recent and heartening development, Professor Patrick Egaga of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been successfully released after enduring a harrowing 26 days in captivity. Professor Egaga, who holds the position of Director of Servicom at UNICAL, was abducted from the institution’s Staff quarters on November 12, 2023. His release comes as a relief to the academic community and loved ones who anxiously awaited news of his safety.

The abductors, targeting the esteemed academician, had demanded a ransom of N50 million for his freedom. The circumstances surrounding his release and whether the ransom was paid remain undisclosed, leaving room for speculation about the challenges faced during his captivity.

While Professor Egaga’s freedom brings a sense of relief, another distressing incident unfolded in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River. The traditional ruler of the area, HRM Maurice Edet, fell victim to a violent abduction at his residence in Asin ufot, Ayamba Ikot Akriba community. This unfortunate event resulted in the loss of an aide to the traditional ruler, who was fatally shot while attempting to resist the kidnappers.

The incident in Akpabuyo, known for its notoriety, emphasizes the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in proximity to Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State. The proximity of such incidents to urban centers underscores the need for heightened security measures and vigilance across the region.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the abduction of HRM Maurice Edet but provided limited details, stating that the police were still gathering information. The loss of life during the abduction highlights the dangers associated with such criminal activities and the urgent need for coordinated efforts to enhance security in the area.

As these events unfold, concerns about the safety of individuals in the region persist. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the complex security landscape that demands proactive measures to safeguard lives and property. The academic community and the public at large anxiously await further details on both incidents, hoping for a swift resolution to ensure the well-being of those affected.

It is essential for security agencies to address these challenges promptly and comprehensively to instill confidence in the populace and create an environment where individuals can go about their daily lives without fear. The incidents further underscore the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement, local communities, and relevant stakeholders to curb criminal activities and ensure the safety and security of the region.
