In a recent session at the Port Harcourt Magistrate Court, Damian Okoligwe, a 400-level student studying Petrochemical Engineering at the University of Port Harcourt, has been remanded in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre. This action follows the accusation of Okoligwe for the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend, Justina Otuene, a 300-level student in the Biochemistry Department of the same university.
During the plea hearing yesterday, the prosecuting counsel passionately appealed to the court for Okoligwe’s remand, citing the gravity of the offense. The defense counsel, O.G Nweke, did not object to this request.
Chief Magistrate Nnenda Obiageri-Onugbum, presiding over the trial, carefully considered the arguments from both sides and ruled in favor of remanding Okoligwe in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre. Additionally, the magistrate directed the transfer of the case file to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
While awaiting the DPP report, the magistrate adjourned the case until December 15, 2023, demonstrating a commitment to due process and thorough legal considerations.
