Nigeria: Two hospitalised, five arrested over violent Kano celebration – Police

The police in Kano have arrested five individuals for causing a disturbance and inciting violence during the celebration of the Supreme Court judgment on the Kano state governorship election. 

The Supreme Court verdict restored the victory of Governor Abba Yusuf in the 

, after he was initially sacked by the election tribunal and the Court of Appeal. The restoration of his victory led to wild celebrations by his supporters. The Commissioner of Police in Kano, Usaini Gumel, stated that the five suspects were arrested following a clash between supporters of Governor Yusuf’s party, the New Nigeria People’s Party, and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Gaya Local Government Area. 

Two victims of the clash are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Gaya. Gumel warned political actors in the state against violence and urged them to celebrate without infringing on the rights of others. He assured the public that security had been strengthened in strategic locations to maintain peace and that anyone who disrupts the peace would face the full wrath of the law.
