A dark cloud descends on Kwahaslalek Community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State as the Police Command confirms a horrifying attack on January 24. The assailants, identified as gunmen, left a trail of devastation, claiming 10 lives, reducing 10 houses to ashes, and leaving two others injured. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, provided these grim details during a press briefing in Jos on Thursday.

Alabo painted a distressing picture of the aftermath, revealing that the attackers not only took lives but also destroyed property worth millions. The casualties include over ten recovered corpses from various locations in Mangu, with two injured individuals currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. Additionally, one vehicle and ten houses fell victim to the relentless onslaught, adding to the tragedy that befell the community.

However, amidst the grim statistics, the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), a socio-cultural group, claims that the toll is even more staggering, asserting that 30 lives were lost during the attack. Joseph Gwankat, the National President of MDA, expressed that the victims predominantly comprised women and children, emphasizing the severity of the tragedy.

In response to this wave of violence, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State strongly condemned the killings and issued a call to action for security agencies. He urged them to be proactive in safeguarding the lives and property of the people, emphasizing the need for a swift and comprehensive response to ensure justice for the victims.

Governor Mutfwang, while appealing for calm, called on the residents to be law-abiding citizens and support security agencies in their duty to maintain peace. He issued a stern warning that his administration would not tolerate any further breakdown of law and order in any part of the state, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

As Plateau State grapples with this fresh wave of violence, the echoes of anguish reverberate not only in the affected community but also throughout the region. The immediate need for security measures, justice for the victims, and a collective effort to prevent further tragedy looms large as authorities navigate these challenging times.
