On the fateful day of February 14, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, AAUA, Ondo State, where a 20-year-old female student, Adekunle Ifeoluwa, was fatally stabbed to death. The perpetrator, 21-year-old Olubodun Sanni, a final year student at the same institution, confessed to the crime, revealing that his motive was to steal her iPhone XR.

According to police sources, Sanni was drawn to the victim’s phone and devised a plan to befriend her. He approached her under the pretense of transferring some films from her phone to his iPad. The unsuspecting Ifeoluwa obliged but didn’t allow Sanni into her room, citing low battery on her phone. Sanni then left, claiming he would return with his power bank to charge her phone.

Later that evening, Sanni returned to Ifeoluwa’s room, and upon being let in, he grabbed her by the neck and fatally stabbed her in the chest with a knife he had brought along. He then took the victim’s phone, destroyed her SIM card, and inserted his own.

Police investigations revealed that Sanni intended to use the stolen phone during the day and hid it inside an uncompleted building close to the hostel. The SIM card was active, and police traced the call chart to Sanni’s mother, who was subsequently arrested. After interrogation, the mother led police detectives to her son’s hostel, where he was apprehended.

The state Police Commissioner, Abayomi Oladipo, stated that modern technology was instrumental in tracing the stolen phone, leading to Sanni’s arrest. Sanni, a Geology student at the institution, was paraded alongside other criminals.

The tragic loss of Adekunle Ifeoluwa serves as a reminder of the dangers lurking in seemingly innocuous situations and the importance of vigilance. It also underscores the role of modern technology in solving crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice.

In the wake of this incident, it is imperative for educational institutions to enhance security measures and educate students on personal safety. Additionally, the community must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
