Tragedy struck on Aba Waterside River bridge in Ogbor-Hill, Abia State, claiming four lives and injuring several others in an auto crash. The incident involved a truck carrying a 40-foot container that lost its brakes, colliding with a car and tricycle, resulting in the fatalities.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, descending from Opobo Junction on Aba Ikot-Ekpene road, swerved due to brake failure, hitting a broken down truck on the bridge. The collision with the stationary vehicle caused further impact with a Sienna bus and a tricycle.
Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials were on the scene directing traffic, while sympathizers worked diligently to rescue those trapped under the container. However, frustration mounted over the delay in obtaining a towing van to lift the fallen container.
Criticism arose regarding the absence of a flyover on the Aba waterside bridge to alleviate traffic congestion and concerns about heavy-duty vehicles on the road during daytime. Eyewitness Ikenna Nzekwe questioned the government’s failure to address these issues promptly, expressing disappointment in the response from government agencies, particularly the FRSC.
