In a tragic incident on Sunday night, the Nigerian Army mistakenly bombed a Maulud event in Kurmin Biri village, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, thinking it was a bandits’ camp. The unintended attack resulted in the death of at least 85 villagers, including children, women, and the elderly, with an additional 53 individuals sustaining serious injuries.

Survivors recounted the horror as they tried to rescue the injured and retrieve the dead for burial when the aircraft returned and dropped a second bomb, causing further devastation in the village. Despite the Nigerian Air Force distancing itself from the bombing, the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and convened an emergency security meeting.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) expressed sadness over the unfortunate event, while the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) called for a comprehensive investigation into the “avoidable mistake.” The General Officer Commanding One Division Nigerian Army, Major-General V. Okoro, briefed the Kaduna State Government, explaining that the military was on a routine mission against terrorists but inadvertently attacked the villagers.

Local residents shared harrowing experiences, emphasizing that the bomb was dropped during a Maulud event, resulting in the immediate death of numerous people. Samuel Aruwan, Overseeing Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Kaduna State, suggested compensation for victims and stressed that only military authorities could speak on intelligence gathering before the incident.

Governor Uba Sani offered free medical treatment to the affected residents, ordering immediate investigations and dispatching officials to assess the situation. The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victims, prevent future occurrences, and uphold human rights and international humanitarian law.

The tragedy underscores the need for careful scrutiny of military operations to avoid civilian casualties and emphasizes the importance of transparent investigations to identify causes, prevent similar incidents, and build trust between the military and the civilian population. The affected families, communities, and the entire nation mourn the loss of innocent lives in this regrettable incident.
