The quiet town of Oda in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State, was rocked by a heartbreaking incident as a 17-year-old secondary school student, identified as Wunmi, allegedly stabbed her 54-year-old foster mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi, to death. The tragic event unfolded in a three-bedroom bungalow on Superjet Road, Premier Estate, off Oda Road, where the victim, a senior civil servant, resided alone with the suspect.

Sources close to the family revealed that the suspect, who is now in police custody, had been grappling with mental health challenges, for which she had undergone treatment prior to the fatal altercation. Wunmi’s struggles with her mental well-being reportedly led to her withdrawal from school during her time in Senior Secondary School 2 (SSS2). Despite attempts to address her condition, the situation escalated tragically, culminating in the devastating loss of life.

Neighbours expressed dismay at the circumstances surrounding the incident, questioning the decision to allow Wunmi to remain in the care of her foster mother despite her known mental health issues. Calls were made for greater intervention and support for individuals facing similar challenges, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

In the wake of the incident, law enforcement officials have launched an investigation to ascertain the motives behind the fatal stabbing. Funmi Odunlami, the police spokesperson, confirmed the tragic death of Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi and assured the public that detectives were diligently probing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the role of mental health in the tragic events that unfolded.

As the community grapples with shock and grief, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support systems. Efforts to address mental health issues must be prioritized at both individual and societal levels to prevent further loss of life and ensure the well-being of vulnerable individuals within our communities.
