Nigeria: “Rising Menace: Vandals Strike Again, Targeting Power Towers in the North-East, Claiming a Life”

In a distressing recurrence, suspected vandals have targeted power transmission towers in the North-East for the second time within a week, resulting in the tragic death of a security operative. The incident occurred along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Transmission Line on Thursday, marking another blow to the region’s power infrastructure.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) released a statement on Friday, with General Manager Ndidi Mbah expressing profound sorrow over the loss of an officer from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). This incident follows a similar attack reported by TCN the previous week, where vandals destroyed two transmission towers, disrupting electricity supply to parts of the North East, including Borno and Yobe States.

In the most recent attack, three towers were destroyed, and the NSCDC officer lost his life in the line of duty. Ndidi Mbah conveyed TCN’s condolences to the family of the deceased and the NSCDC, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The previous assault on the transmission towers had taken place around Katsaita Village in Yobe State, resulting in the collapse of a 330kV transmission tower (T372), which, in turn, brought down another tower (T373) along the same transmission line route. The power outage affected Yobe and Borno States.

Upon investigation, TCN engineers discovered evidence of explosives used by the vandals to bring down the towers. The villagers confirmed hearing a loud explosion preceding the collapse. The deliberate targeting of power infrastructure adds a layer of complexity to the challenges already faced by the region, impacting not only electricity supply but also endangering lives.

This disturbing trend raises concerns about the security of critical infrastructure, necessitating swift and decisive action to apprehend those responsible and implement measures to prevent future attacks. The vulnerability of power transmission infrastructure in the face of such deliberate acts underscores the need for heightened security and vigilance to protect essential services and the lives of those tasked with safeguarding them.

As the authorities grapple with these security challenges, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the broader issues affecting the North-East and the imperative to address not only the immediate consequences but also the underlying factors contributing to such acts of vandalism.
