Several legal practitioners have criticized the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Aderemi Adeoye, for his involvement in business activities that could tarnish the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. This criticism comes amidst allegations leveled against the CP by some disgruntled members of ATIC Enterprise.

ATIC Enterprise operates as a cooperative society model, functioning as an online investment platform initiated by Commissioner Adeoye. Members pool their funds into investments with the expectation of wealth creation. However, some members have voiced grievances, particularly concerning delays in the allocation of purchased properties despite years of investment.

In response to these accusations, Adeoye denied any fraudulent intent, asserting that the investments were made collectively as a cooperative, with documented evidence published for transparency. Nonetheless, the aggrieved members lodged a formal petition with the Inspector-General of Police on February 1, 2024, outlining their concerns. Despite acknowledgment of the petition, they claim to have received no further communication from the police force.

In light of these developments, legal experts have expressed concern over Adeoye’s alleged breach of the law governing police conduct. Monday Ubani, a human rights lawyer and chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law, highlighted the potential damage to the reputation of the police force, emphasizing the importance of integrity and adherence to regulations.

Similarly, Collins Aigbogun, another rights lawyer, pointed out that the Police Act prohibits officers from engaging in such business ventures, especially while serving in official capacities. He emphasized that any violation of the enabling Act could have serious ramifications.

As the allegations persist and the police force remains silent on the matter, the situation underscores the need for accountability and adherence to legal standards within law enforcement institutions.
