In a recent legal development, a 30-year-old labourer named Samson Ibrahim, residing at Perfect Combination Garden in Abuja, has been sentenced to 17 months in prison by the Lugbe Grade I Area Court for the theft of meat and tomatoes. The conviction came after Ibrahim pleaded guilty to charges of joint act and theft.

The presiding judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted the convict an option of a N50,000 fine, coupled with a stern warning to become a responsible citizen and abstain from criminal activities after completing his jail term. Kagarko acknowledged that the punishment might have been more severe if not for the convict’s admission of guilt, sparing the court the complexities of a prolonged prosecution.

The case, brought to light by the complainant, Amilsa Rabiat, of the same address, originated from an incident reported at the Life Police Station on January 9. According to the prosecutor, Mr. Olisaemeka Okeke, the theft occurred on January 8 around 11:30 p.m. when the convict, in collaboration with Silas Garba (now at large), was apprehended by a vigilant group in Life Camp.

During the incident, Ibrahim pilfered a bag containing meat and tomatoes valued at N200,000 from the Perfect Combination Garden. Additionally, he made off with a gas cylinder belonging to Rabiat’s neighbor. The subsequent police investigation revealed the extent of Ibrahim’s illicit activities.

Okeke disclosed that on November 15, 2023, the convict and Garba unlawfully entered Rabiat’s garden, making away with a 40-inch television worth N80,000 and a speaker valued at N130,000. Further investigation uncovered that the duo had previously stolen 21 crates of beer and bottled water, amounting to N230,000, from Rabiat’s shop.

The prosecutor outlined that the convict confessed to these crimes during police interrogation, leading to charges under Sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code. These sections deal with joint acts and theft, respectively.

As the legal proceedings unfolded, the court emphasized the seriousness of the offences committed by Ibrahim, resulting in the imposed jail term and the option of a fine. This serves as a reminder of the consequences individuals face when engaging in criminal activities. The court proceedings underscore the importance of upholding the rule of law and maintaining societal order.
