In a significant and coordinated operation, law enforcement agencies in Imo State, comprising the police and military forces, undertook a forceful invasion of a suspected camp belonging to the Eastern Security Network (ESN), an armed group associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The incident occurred in Ihite Owerre, situated in the Orlu Council Area of Imo state, last Monday, leading to the arrest of one individual amid a clash with the armed group.

Henry Okoye, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), provided details of the operation to the press in Owerri, highlighting the circumstances that prompted the intervention. The move was initiated following reported cases of kidnapping, involving Mr. Sabinus Ugwuebu, a Road Safety Officer, and HRH Eze Ohiri, a former Eze Imo. The joint operation, conducted at approximately 3:30 am on 8th January 2024, targeted the suspected terrorist camp, resulting in a confrontation with the armed group.

During the operation, law enforcement recovered a cache of weapons and materials from the camp, including one pump action gun, two double barrel guns, two single barrel guns, fifty-four rounds of live cartridges, military uniforms, six motorcycles, a box containing locally made explosives, and road safety uniforms belonging to the kidnapped officer.

The police emphasized their ongoing efforts in investigating the incident, aiming to apprehend the fleeing suspects and, if possible, rescue the kidnapped victims. The arrested suspect and any others apprehended during the investigation are expected to face legal proceedings once the inquiry is concluded.

Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, affirmed the commitment of the law enforcement agencies to collaborate closely with the military and other relevant security entities. Their collective objective is to eradicate various forms of criminal activities within the state. CP Danjuma asserted that the command would persist in its efforts until the kidnapped victims are safely released, and those responsible for the criminal activities are brought to justice.

This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in addressing insurgency and criminal activities within the region. The joint efforts of the police and military reflect a commitment to maintaining public safety and combating threats posed by armed groups. The community remains vigilant as investigations continue and awaits further developments in this complex and sensitive situation.
