In a troubling development, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent killings of military personnel in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The tragic incident, which occurred during a peace and rescue mission, has drawn widespread outrage and calls for justice from various quarters.

The statement, articulated by Doubra Okotete, Omoghomi Olu-Derimon, and Luguard Izoukumor, chairman, secretary, and information officer of IYC respectively, denounces the violence as both barbaric and wicked. While expressing empathy for the affected community, the IYC underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for such egregious acts.

Emphasizing the need for swift action, the IYC urges the Delta State government to intervene decisively to protect the lives and property of innocent civilians in the area. It is imperative, the statement asserts, that those responsible for the heinous act are identified and brought to justice to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace to the embattled community.

Of particular concern is the specter of reprisal attacks, which risks exacerbating an already volatile situation. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has echoed these sentiments, calling on the federal government to intervene and prevent further escalation of violence. Falana emphasizes the importance of upholding the principles of justice and accountability, cautioning against collective punishment and advocating for due process in addressing grievances.

Drawing parallels to past incidents of military reprisals, including the infamous massacres in Odi and Zaki Biam, Falana underscores the imperative of avoiding a repeat of history. The military’s restraint in the face of provocation is commended, with Falana urging thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the killings.

In a show of solidarity with the bereaved families of the slain officers and soldiers, Falana calls for prompt compensation and support, highlighting the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty. Additionally, he stresses the importance of collaboration between security agencies, local authorities, and community leaders in apprehending the perpetrators and addressing underlying tensions.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, there is a pressing need for comprehensive measures to prevent further loss of life and restore trust between security forces and the communities they serve. Dialogue, accountability, and respect for human rights must form the cornerstone of efforts to address the root causes of conflict and foster lasting peace and stability in the region.

In conclusion, Falana reiterates his call for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the killings, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability in building a more inclusive and resilient society.
