In a tragic incident that occurred on Monday gunmen suspected to be cultists shot and killed a printer named George Sopruchi at Abakiliki Street in the Mile 1 area of Diobu in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. The gunmen reportedly trailed their target to Abakiliki close to Emenike Street at around 8:30 pm and shot him dead while he was engaged in a conversation with someone.
This incident comes just 72 hours after another suspected cultist shot a man dead in the Nanka/Lumuber area of Diobu, causing fear and anxiety among the residents of the area. According to an eyewitness, the gunmen not only took the victim’s motorcycle but also one of his mobile phones. Onlookers immediately rushed to the scene after the assailants fled and tried to help the victim by taking him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he had already passed away.
The eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed concern about the increasing level of violence in Diobu and called on the police to be more proactive in ensuring the safety of residents. The spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, had previously confirmed the killing in the Nanka/Lumuber area and stated that investigations were ongoing to apprehend the culprits.
Efforts to reach Iringe-Koko for comments on the latest incident were unsuccessful as she did not answer calls made to her telephone by our reporter. She also had not responded to a text message sent to her at the time of filing this report.
The recent incidents of violence in Diobu have raised serious concerns among the local community, and there is a growing demand for increased security measures to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents. The police authorities are urged to intensify their efforts in apprehending the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
