Nigeria: Gunmen Attack Fishermen, Abduct 4 off Bayelsa Coast; Kidnap Catholic Priest

Yenagoa — Suspected sea robbers targeted fishermen off the Atlantic coast of Brass in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, resulting in one death and the abduction of four individuals. The attackers also seized engines and fishing gear from their victims.
The incident occurred over the weekend in a coastal enclave predominantly inhabited by fishermen. According to sources, two fishermen sustained injuries during the attack, with one succumbing before receiving medical attention. The gunmen abducted four others.
Spokesman for the state police command, Muhammed Musa, stated he is yet to be briefed on the situation when contacted.
Meanwhile, Brass council chairman, Hanson Alabo-Karika, strongly condemned the attack and abduction. He emphasized that such unwarranted and barbaric acts, causing loss of life, should not go unpunished. Alabo-Karika called on security agents to swiftly investigate, arrest, and prosecute those involved in the crime.
He urged community leaders in the area to be vigilant, especially as the festive season approaches, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the peace achieved under the Governor Douye Diri-led administration.
