In a tragic incident on Sunday evening, gunmen suspected to be bandits ambushed and killed nine traders along the Jibia/Batsari Road in Katsina State. Reports indicate that the victims, who were returning from a local market in Jibia, fell prey to the assailants’ attack around 6 p.m.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the traders were traveling in two vehicles when they encountered the armed assailants, who swiftly opened fire on them. One of the drivers and several traders were fatally shot, while both vehicles were set ablaze by the attackers.

Following the attack, sympathizers retrieved the bodies of the victims and transported them to the Jibia General Hospital, where their grieving relatives collected them the following morning.

As of Monday afternoon, the exact number of casualties and the extent of injuries sustained by other traders remain unclear. Furthermore, there are reports of individuals being abducted during the ambush, although specific details have yet to emerge.

Despite the gravity of the incident, neither the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Muazu, nor the spokesperson for the state police command, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, have issued official statements regarding the attack.

Meanwhile, Governor Dikko Radda has asserted that relative peace prevails in the state, attributing it to the diligent efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. Speaking at the annual West African Social Activities organized by the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina, the governor commended the security forces for their dedication and urged them to maintain their vigilance.

Governor Radda, represented by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, emphasized the significance of events like the West African Social Activities in fostering positive relationships between the Nigerian Army and local communities.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by residents of Katsina State and underscores the urgent need for enhanced measures to safeguard lives and property in the region.
