Gateway Polytechnic, located in Sapaade, Remo North local government area of Ogun State, has taken the difficult decision to temporarily shut down the institution due to a series of alarming robbery attacks on its students. The relentless assaults by armed robbers have not only led to the loss of valuable possessions but also instances of violence, including the tragic death of a student and injuries to nine others.

Over the past two weeks, the perpetrators targeted students and residents in the Isara, Ipara, and Ode communities, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. Faced with the escalating threat, the management of Gateway Polytechnic deemed it necessary to close the school until a sense of normalcy is restored.

The Acting Registrar of the Polytechnic, J. O. Popoola, communicated the decision through a memorandum obtained by the media. In response to the closure, the management introduced a contingency plan by initiating online classes for the affected students who had recently resumed for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The memo emphasized that all physical lectures on campus would be suspended for the next two weeks, starting from Monday, December 4, 2023. During this period, students were instructed to refrain from visiting the polytechnic premises. Instead, they were encouraged to participate in online lectures, ensuring the continuation of academic activities despite the challenging circumstances.

The safety and well-being of students remain a top priority for the polytechnic’s management, and the decision to implement online classes reflects a commitment to providing education while addressing security concerns. The closure serves as a temporary measure to protect students and staff, with the hope that the situation will improve, allowing for the resumption of normal campus activities in the near future.

It’s a challenging time for the Gateway Polytechnic community as they navigate the impact of these criminal activities, but the institution is actively seeking solutions to ensure the ongoing education of its students in a secure environment.
