Nigeria: Federal Authorities Take Action Following Discrimination Incident at KFC Outlet

In response to a recent incident of discrimination against Adebola Daniel, son of former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel, at the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet in the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken decisive action by temporarily shutting down the establishment.

On March 27, Adebola Daniel recounted his distressing experience via his official social media platform, detailing how he and his family were denied entry into the KFC outlet at MMIA on the grounds of his wheelchair usage. Despite attempts to reason with the manager, they were adamantly refused service, prompting Daniel to share his encounter online.

In response to this incident, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, confirmed that the authority had conducted an investigation and subsequently ordered the closure of the KFC facility at MMIA effective March 28. This action aligns with Lagos State laws protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, particularly regarding access to public spaces.

Similarly, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) condemned the discriminatory behavior exhibited at the KFC outlet. Acting Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Adamu Abdullahi, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to upholding consumer rights and pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to address the issue appropriately.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, KFC issued a formal apology to Adebola Daniel and expressed remorse for the distress caused. The fast-food chain reiterated its dedication to inclusivity and respect, emphasizing the importance of addressing biases and discrimination within its establishments. Committing to immediate action, KFC announced plans to conduct inclusion training for all employees and implement measures to ensure a welcoming environment for every guest.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity in public spaces. By holding accountable those who perpetrate such actions and implementing proactive measures, authorities and businesses can work together to create environments that uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals.
