Tragic Auto Collision Claims Eight Lives on Omu-Aran-Ilorin Highway
In a devastating incident on Friday night, eight individuals lost their lives in a fatal collision at Oke-Onigbin along the Omu-Aran-Ilorin Highway in Kwara’s Irepodun Local Government Area. The accident involved an articulated vehicle and a bus, as confirmed by Mr. Stephen Dawulung, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kwara.
According to preliminary investigations, the Mitsubishi bus, bound for Ilorin, attempted to overtake another bus, resulting in a head-on collision with the articulated vehicle. The impact claimed the lives of eight individuals on the spot, including one male adult, three female adults, and four children. Additionally, six others sustained injuries during the crash.
The deceased have been placed in a morgue, while the injured are receiving medical attention at another hospital. Dawulung attributed the tragic incident to overspeeding, wrongful overtaking, and poor visibility. He urged motorists to avoid nighttime journeys and overspeeding, emphasizing the importance of taking breaks every four hours to prevent crashes caused by factors like fatigue, poor visibility, and loss of vehicle control.
Dawulung stressed the need for heightened caution and concentration while driving to ensure road safety and prevent further tragedies.
