In Enugu, a 70-year-old man named Anthony Mgbe from Umuagu, Inyi, Oji-River Local Government Area, has been placed in prison custody by a magistrate court for the alleged rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl. Facing a two-count charge initiated by the police, he is accused of “unlawfully having carnal knowledge of a minor” and “unlawful killing by having unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor, leading to her fatal bleeding.” The severity of the charges prompted the magistrate court to deny bail, adjourning the case until November 22, 2023, as revealed by the Women Aid Collective (WACOL) on their official social media platform.

Community members, disturbed by the man’s history of violence against women and girls, reported the case to WACOL. Despite his previous ability to evade justice due to his children’s influence, the family of the deceased sought WACOL’s protection and legal assistance to ensure the perpetrator faced the consequences of the law. In response to a petition from the WACOL legal team to the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mgbe was arrested and subsequently charged in court.
