Residents of the Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency in Ondo State find themselves embroiled in a dispute with their representative, Jimi Odimayo, over the quality and safety of rice distributed as Christmas gifts. The controversy has stirred heated discussions among constituents, creating a rift between the lawmaker and the people he serves.
A viral video circulating on social media showcases residents expressing their discontent with the branded rice bearing the image of the legislator. One elderly woman voiced her surprise, highlighting concerns about the unusual quality of the rice and questioning the motives behind such distribution. She emphasized the potential dangers of consuming the rice, stating, “If you eat this one, hospital can’t do the surgery.”
The video also features a man who decried the rice as “terribly bad” and unsafe for consumption, alleging that it contained stones. Expressing disbelief, he criticized the quality of the rice and questioned the lawmaker’s judgment, especially considering his aspirations to become governor.
In response to the allegations, Jimi Odimayo, through his media aide Victor Adedeji, refuted the claims, attributing them to political opponents seeking to tarnish his reputation. Adedeji urged the public to dismiss the accusations and assured them that the distributed rice had undergone stringent quality checks, being sourced from reputable suppliers.
Adedeji added that beyond the rice distribution, Odimayo had also provided relief materials and financial aid from his personal funds, a practice he claimed had been consistent since 2014. Despite the assertions in the video, Odimayo maintained that the distributed rice was ‘brown rice,’ approved by the Federal Government for consumption.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the constituents remain divided, with some standing by their rejection of the Christmas rice and others defending the lawmaker’s actions. The situation underscores the complexities of the relationship between elected officials and the communities they serve, bringing to light issues of trust and accountability.
