The recent demolition and burning of shanties and properties of traders in Anambra State has caused concerns among the residents.

The demolition was carried out by the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) in collaboration with the Rapid Response Unit of the agency. The traders’ properties, including wares and food items, were set ablaze during the exercise.

The Head of the ACTDA Development Control Unit stated that the demolition was necessary to address the negative state of the environment caused by illegal structures and business activities. The agency emphasized its commitment to restore orderliness and rid Awka of illegal structures and shanties. However, some traders expressed their worry and frustration over the destruction of their livelihoods. They felt that the demolition was an unjust act that disregarded the plight of the poor who are struggling to make ends meet. The member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency also condemned the demolition and called for the compensation and rehabilitation of the affected traders.
