Nigeria: 13-year-old boy drowns swimming in Lagos beach

On February 29, tragedy struck at Alatise beach in the Ajah area of Lagos State, as 13-year-old Kelvin Onyengba drowned during a hangout with his friends. The incident occurred around 12:00pm on Tuesday, according to sources.

Kelvin had gone swimming with five of his friends when the unfortunate incident took place. A police source revealed that the boy lost his life due to the strong waves of the sea. Kelvin’s mother, who was present at the beach, recounted that her son was swept away by the water. Despite efforts to locate him, Kelvin did not return to his parents.

Confirming the incident, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, stated that detectives from the area had visited the scene. However, the family is still awaiting the recovery of Kelvin’s body from the sea.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety, especially for children. Swimming in open water can be risky, and it is crucial for individuals to be cautious and aware of the potential dangers. Proper water safety education and supervision are essential to prevent such accidents from occurring.
