The Secretary General of The Gambia Moral Congress GMC, Hon. Mai Ahmad Fatty has tasked the Government of The Gambia to act on the concerns raised by Gambian women on the high number of Maternal Mortality cases in the country.

Speaking to a team of reporters at the ‘Gambian Women’s Lives Matters’ protest on Wednesday 23rd September, along the Kairaba Avenue, the GMC Leader called on the Government to give attention to the alarming rate of women dying in labour recently.

“Its about time the nation is sensitized to a point and those who are duty bearers would be held to account, ensuring that the government of this country can accord the top right attention to maternal health to women,” the GMC Leader stated.

The former Interior Minister warned the Government on the impact of the protest that could be massive, as its the first time in the history of the country for women to come together supported by other people in order to bring this matter to a global attention.

“We believe an insensitive government is the only type of administration that will ignore the plight of the citizens when they are at mass under circumstances that could be averted,” he remarked.

He added that a Government that is consensus and stand for the people cannot ignore the massive action taken by the citizens through voluntary movement.
