Kartong VDC holds Annual General Meeting

The new Village Development Committee (VDC) of Kartong village in Kombo South District, West Coast Region on Friday 23rd December 2022 organized an Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The AGM aimed to update residents of Kartong on the current work of the VDC; highlight opportunities in the coastal village and the way forward to bring development to the doorsteps of residents.
Mariama Susan Gibba, Vice Chairperson for the VDC expressed delight with residents for their massive attendance. She said the forum was essential in updating residents on current development in the community.
Momodou Lamin Touray, Secretary General for the VDC said the new committee was formed following a community general meeting held to ensure the previous VDC was change to a vibrant one.
He said since the establishment, the new VDC has been working with the Brikama Area Council (BAC) to equip their executive with the requisite knowledge to ensure development in the community.
“The VDC has worked with the Council to settle disputes in the community,” he added.
Buba Kwame Jarjou, Chairman for Kartong VDC said the VDC was established by an act of Parliament and therefore urged all residents to accept the VDC.
“Refusing to accept the VDC is failing to accept the law of the land,” he noted.
He commended BAC for its immense contribution in the maintenance of peace in Kartong as well as its leading role in building the VDC’s capacity.
Mr. Jarjou also urged residents of Karton to maintain peace and social coexistence in the community.
Chairman Jarjou revealed that there are lots of job opportunities at Kartong Fishing Port, noting that to tap such job opportunities there is a greater need for youth of Kartong village to acquire fishery related skills.
This, he said will contribute to the development of the community.
According to him, the VDC is working to put mechanisms in place to encourage livestock rearing in the community to help gardeners and farmers get organic manure, adding that his committee will foster good relationship between farmers and livestock owners to ensure mutual benefits.
Hatap Jaiteh, spokesperson for the VDC in highlighting their achievements said they successfully stopped sand mining in the community, unified the community and trained executive members of the VDC.
