Former VP Njie – Saidy tells TRRC
By Ousman A. Marong, Reporting from Thies, Senegal
The former Vice President of The Gambia, Dr. Isatou Njie – Saidy has revealed to the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) that the former President Yahya Jammeh do give her orders to implement in other sectors of development in the country but not on security matters. She said Jammeh always jealousy guards the security sector and has never given her orders on security matters, adding that he handles security matters by himself even when he travels outside the country.
The former VP who served under Jammeh’s government for 20 years was testifying before the TRRC on Thursday afternoon at the Dunes Hotel in Kololi.
Responding to questions raised by lead counsel Essa Faal regarding her knowledge and role in resolving the April 10/11 students’ demonstration in the year 2000; the former VP Njie – Saidy denied giving orders to the military to handle the students. She also denied that Jammeh told her to tell the security to “handle those bastards in whatever form.”
She said it is possible that former president Jammeh who was in Cuba on a State visit during the said students’ demonstration can say such remarks, but she cannot remember him telling her such.
According to her, she knew about the death of students few days after the incident. She recalled that she read a statement immediately after meeting the security chiefs on the first day of the demonstration in the afternoon.
“At the level of the National Security Council (NSC), we agreed to generally stabilize the situation. A statement was issued, and I visited the destroyed facilities and the people who were injured and admitted at the hospital,” ex-VP Njie-Saidy told the commission.
She further disclosed that there was a Commission of Inquiry and at the end, former president Jammeh gave the security and students amnesty through an Indemnity Act, to ensure peace and security.
She denied knowing a lot of information about the deaths and the demonstration in general.
Mamos Tv will write more details about the former VP’s testimony in our subsequent news bulletin tomorrow.
