Itorero: A platform that empowers Rwandan youth

The Ministries of, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and National Unity and Civic Engagement are set to host the highly anticipated Itorero Indangamirwa Intake 13/2023 program.
The initiative aimed at engaging and empowering Rwandan youth living in Rwanda and abroad, aged 18-25, will provide a transformative training experience focused on personal development, professional growth, and a deep connection to their Rwandan heritage.
Scheduled to take place from July 14 to August 24, eligible individuals are reminded to take note of an important deadline. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has set May 31 as the final date to complete the registration process.
The program first introduced in 2008, has gained immense significance over the years. However, due to the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program’s 12th edition in 2019 had to be postponed. Now, with the world gradually recovering from the pandemic, the upcoming Intake 13 holds even greater importance in shaping the future of Rwandan youth.
Sandrine Maziyateke Uwimbabazi, Director of Rwanda Community Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the program’s purpose, stating, “Itorero Indangamirwa aims to instill a sense of national identity, values, and civic responsibility among Rwandan youth living abroad. We want to ensure that they not only contribute to the socio-economic growth of our country but also maintain a strong connection with their Rwandan roots.
“We consider our citizens living abroad as a relevant and integral constituency of our country. Their participation in Itorero Indangamirwa is a testament to our commitment to invest in every citizen, ensuring they become valuable members of society,” said Uwimbabazi.
The curriculum of Itorero Indangamirwa Intake 13/2023 is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience. Participants will engage in various subjects and activities that promote personal and professional growth. The program includes essential military training, counterterrorism awareness, political education, in-depth discussions on Rwanda’s history, and insights into the National Strategy for Transformation.
Additionally, study tours to different regions of the country will allow participants to explore Rwanda’s cultural heritage firsthand.
In an Interview with The New Times, Anita Kayirangwa, Executive Director for National Unity, Itorero and Citizenship Education said Itorero Indangamirwa aspires to positively impact the personal and professional development of participants.
“Through this program, attendees will acquire the necessary skills, knowledge, and values to strengthen their capacity to contribute effectively. It represents a combination of education, skill-building, and cultural appreciation,” she said.
Itorero Indangamirwa stands as a testament to the government’s unwavering dedication to empower and engage the Rwandan youth both within the country and across the diaspora. This transformative program serves as a platform for the active involvement of young Rwandans in the nation’s development, reflecting the government’s recognition of their vital role in shaping the future.
