China: Devastating Earthquake Claims 95 Lives in China

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a powerful earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 95 individuals and left 220 others injured in north-west China. The incident, which unfolded on Monday, has been extensively reported by state media.

The seismic shockwave struck Gansu province around midnight, causing significant structural damage not only in Gansu but also in the neighboring province of Qinghai. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.9 with a depth of 10km (six miles). As news of the disaster spread, rescue operations were promptly initiated early on Tuesday morning.

Amidst the ongoing aftermath in China, global attention shifts to the escalating situation in Gaza. The United States, represented by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, has entered discussions with Israel to address the conflict in Gaza with a more targeted and precise approach.

Speaking from Tel Aviv, Austin reaffirmed the United States’ support for Israel while emphasizing the necessity to minimize harm to civilians. He proposed exploring options for “lower intensity operations” to mitigate the impact of the conflict. This development follows reports from health officials in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, revealing that Israeli air strikes resulted in the tragic loss of 110 lives in Jabalia late on Sunday.

Israel, in response, has not provided a specific comment on the casualties but maintains its position, insisting on targeting what it classifies as “terrorist infrastructure.” Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, a video released by Hamas features three elderly men who have been taken hostage, appealing to Israel for their release.

As these significant events unfold, Vanguard News remains dedicated to providing comprehensive updates and insights into the evolving stories that shape our world.
