A man identified as Sodirudeen Rufai was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to set fire to the Guarantee Trust Bank building in Oke Irewo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
PUNCH His Metro learned that the suspect claims that he decided to sabotage the bank after several complaints that 500,000 Naira was fraudulently withdrawn from his account went unheeded. Ta.
Our correspondent further noted that when the Abeokuta Area Commander of the Metro reported the matter, he was allegedly instructed to allow the bank to follow a process to unravel the circumstances behind the withdrawal. Knew. But
PUNCH Metro found out that things got even worse when he received a call from his bank saying he had been scammed.
Our correspondent learned that after receiving a message from the responding bank official, Rufai returned to the bank with petrol and allegedly started sprinkling it in the banking hall.
While the drama was unfolding, some customers scampered for safety, while others, along with the bank security staff members, wrestled Rufai to the ground before he could use the lighter in his hand.
Meanwhile, during interrogation, the suspect was said to have claimed that he took the action to attract the attention of the necessary authorities about what the bank did with his money.
Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, the state police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said Rufai would be charged with attempted suicide and murder.
Odutola said, “He was fighting a noble cause in an ignoble way. He has a right to make a complaint that his money is missing. But he was wrong. We hold him for attempted suicide by murder because if he had succeeded, he would have killed himself and everyone else in his bank.”
